Our verdict

The Ascent X5 is the top of the current Vitamix home range. It shares its 2.2 HP motor, 48 oz container and 17-inch height with the rest of the Ascent X series, so extra blending power is not what you pay for. What changes is the control panel: a touch interface, ten blending programs plus self-cleaning, an on-screen tamper indicator and a button that adds 15 seconds to a running program.

Against the X4, the step up buys five more programs: smoothie bowl, frappé, nut butter, non-dairy milk and spice grinding. Against the X2 and X3 it also buys the touch interface, the tamper indicator and metal-finish colour options. If you would use those programs every week, the X5 removes guesswork; if not, a lower Ascent X does the same blending by hand.

Every Ascent X base reads SELF-DETECT containers and carries a 10-year Vitamix warranty. The box holds the 48 oz container only, so households that batch large soups may want a 64 oz Ascent container too.
