Our verdict
The X4 sits one step below the X5 and shares nearly everything that affects results: the 2.2 HP motor, the 48 oz container, a digital timer, SELF-DETECT container reading and the 10-year Vitamix warranty. It also gets the two features Vitamix keeps for its top two Ascent X models, a tamper indicator and a +15-second button.
Against the X5 it gives up five programs. The X4 keeps smoothies, frozen desserts, soups, frozen cocktails, and dips and spreads, which covers what most households blend. Against the X2 and X3, the step up buys the touch interface, the tamper indicator and two more programs rather than more power.
At 17 inches on the base it fits under standard cabinets. Vitamix also sells certified reconditioned X4 units, and Costco lists a Black Stainless finish under its own item number.
