Our verdict

The X2 is the entry point to the Ascent X series and, on the published facts, the best balance in the current Vitamix lineup. It uses the same 2.2 HP motor and 48 oz container as the X5, reads SELF-DETECT containers and attachments, has a digital timer and carries the same 10-year warranty. You run it from a speed dial with pulse and on/off switches, plus three programs (smoothies, frozen desserts, soups) and self-cleaning.

The X3 changes only the buttons; the X4 adds a touch interface, two programs and a tamper indicator. None of that changes what comes out of the container. Below the X2, the new VX3 is lighter and cheaper but drops SELF-DETECT and three years of warranty.

At 17 inches tall it fits under standard cabinets, and Vitamix also sells certified reconditioned X2 units.
