Our verdict
The A3500 was the top model of the original Ascent series. Vitamix still lists it, but every colour showed out of stock on the US and Canadian stores when checked, so treat it as a model to buy only if you find one. It stays on this list because it is still the Ascent model most often compared with the newer Ascent X range.
Its distinguishing point is the container: it ships with a 64 oz low-profile container rather than 48 oz, yet still stands 17 inches tall. It has a touchscreen, four programs (smoothies, hot soups, dips and spreads, frozen desserts) plus self-cleaning, a programmable timer, SELF-DETECT and a 10-year warranty.
Against the Ascent X4 and X5 it lacks the tamper indicator and +15-second button, and the X5 has more programs. The Ascent X bases also read the same SELF-DETECT Ascent containers.
